PREFACE

Let's begin this study in prayer...

Colossians 3:15-17
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

PRAYER - Part A (INTRODUCTION)

As a prelude to our study on prayer let us review what Jesus Christ
once said about receiving praise and glory from one another.

I. INTRODUCTION

          John 5:43-44

               and again,

          John 12:42-43

QUESTION: What about you and I? Are we seeking the glory that comes
from God or the glory that comes from men? With this question in mind
we come to the theme of this study.

II. THEME

This theme comes to us from,

          Matthew 6:1

Now with this in mind, let us now read,

III. SOME INSTRUCTIONS FOR

     A. ACTS OF CHARITY

               Matthew 6:2-4

     B. FASTING

               Matthew 6:16-18

Now specifically for this study let us read about,

     C. PRAYER

To do this, let us read from,

               Matthew 6:5-6

If we have any concerns relative to our Father hearing or
answering our prayers, here are some of the most fantastic
truths concerning prayer. First of all we find that,

          1. GOD KNOWS OUR NEEDS

                   Matthew 6:7-8

               and,

          2. AS TRUE DISCIPLES, HE WILL ANSWER OUR PRAYERS

As it turns out the Bible is just loaded with promises that
God hears and answers prayer. To see this, let us read some
               examples.

               a. JESUS COMFORTING HIS DISCIPLES

                         John 14:11-14
Notice vs 12 who has faith in Me, will do
what He has been doing. Then,...

               b. PARABLE OF THE VINE

Rather than reading the entire parable, let us read
                    from,

                         John 15:7

                    and finally,

               c. ENCOURAGEMENT THROUGH THE APOSTLE JOHN

                         1 John 3:21-22
Notice vs 22(b) because we obey His commands
                                              and do what pleases Him.

QUESTION: Does this mean that we should not ask for prayer from
          one another?

Paul was always asking for prayer. To see this, let us begin by
          reading,

               Romans 15:30-33

          Now let us read from,

               Ephesians 6:19-20

QUESTION: So what is the issue that our Lord Jesus Christ is
          dealing with here?

What our Lord is dealing with is self righteousness. In other
words, we are not to pray in such a way as to try to impress our
fellow man. We are to humbly and respectfully come before our
Father in Heaven and present to Him our requests believing that
He will hear and reward us.

          Remember,

               Hebrews 11:6

V. CONCLUSION

Now before we close let us read the following Psalm,

          Psalm 34:1-22

Let's end this study in prayer...

Psalm 5:1-3
Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to You I pray. In the morning, O Lord, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait in expectation.
